WINSFORD Salt Fair officially gets underway tonight, when town mayor, Councillor Gina Lewis, reads the historic Royal Charter at the George and Dragon.

Below is a full list of events featured during Salt Fair 2014.

Wednesday, September 17.

3pm, 247 artificial poppies will be placed in the shape of a large poppy on land at Hill Street – one for each Winsford man who lost his life in the Great War. Local artist Derek Johnson is producing the design.

6pm, George and Dragon, Delamere Street, mayor Gina Lewis will read the Royal Charter granted by King Edward 1 in 1280, which gave permission for a weekly market and an annual fair to be held in the town.

 

Thursday, September 18.

5.45pm, funfair in Dene Drive, Civic opening of Salt Fair 2014 by the mayor and crowning of Salt Queen, Chelsee Fulham. Funfair will run until Sunday, September 21.

 

Friday, September 19.

12noon, former branded Clearance Shop, town centre, judging by the mayor of the ‘build a tank’ art competition.

2pm, marina, ‘Poppy parade', 20 narrowboats bearing poppy wreathes will parade down the river into the Marina watched by the mayor. A representative from each narrowboat will place a wreath on the Hill Street Bank poppy. Reception follows at the Red Lion.

10am-5pm, adjacent to war memorials, town centre, displays by the Winsford Branch of the Royal British Legion.

5-8pm, adjacent to former Bon Marche shop, town centre, fashion Show opened by the mayor at 5pm, featuring singing, street dance and fashion displays by New Look, Peacocks, 152 Fashions, Dorothy Perkins and ASDA.

 

Saturday, Sepetmber 20.

10am-4pm, adjacent to former Bon Marche shop, town centre, entertainment stage.

11am, ASDA, community choir 'VoCEL' sing a selection of Great War songs in the ASDA foyer. Local author John Malam signs copies of his book 'The Story of the First World War for children'.

12noon, former Branded Clearance Shop, town centre, Salt Queen Chelsee Fulham draws first four correct entries for the competition to win a trip down the Winsford Salt Mine.

7pm, Lifestyle Centre, 'On the Home Front' - an evening of dancing, dining and nostalgia.

 

Sunday, September 21.

11am, funfair, Dene Drive, civic parade and service. Parade leaves Wyvern House at 10.45am for the service at 11am, conducted by mayor's chaplain, Reverend Tim Hanson.

11am-5pm, regatta, marina, More than 40 narrowboats from far and wide, world record sailing attempton the Flashes, market stalls, song and dance, refreshments and more.
