YOUNGSTERS from around Winsford showed their eco-love for the children’s Over Allotments open day.

This was the seventh annual Children’s Open Day organised by Over Allotments Association.

Children and teachers from Winsford and Whitegate primary schools visited the plots for guided tours, given by plot-holders at the Moss Bank site.

“The children loved to see ‘Winsford’s Secret Garden’, and this year they were able to see honeybees up close inside a glass-fronted beehive," said John Malam, chairman of the Association.

“For one day in the year, Over Allotments really is the ‘classroom in the open air’."

This year, the schools were set a challenge to make scarecrows based on the theme of ‘sunflowers', as 2015 is the Year of the Sunflower.

Mr Malam said: “The schools had been set a challenge of designing scarecrows on the theme of ‘sunflowers’, and we were delighted to see some wonderful creations.

“Winsford deputy mayor, Cllr David Edwards, and outgoing junior mayor, Megan Hammill, had the hard job of judging them.

“The winner will be announced at the Allotments Open Day on Saturday, July 25.”

In addition, all schools received a bird box and a bee house, funded by the Winsford Educational Partnership, which will be put up in the school grounds.
