WINSFORD and Middlewich Koshido-Ryu Karate Club enjoyed medal success at a world championships in Poland.

A 10-strong Kate and Kumite team travelled to compete in the World Union of Karate Federations Championships in Szczecin, with 10-year-old Rio Johnson scooping a bronze medal in the Kata.

And 13-year-old Dannielle Simpson was a finalist in the same discipline.

For most of the students, it was a first taste of international competition.

Their target now is to be ready for the European Championships in Belgium next year.

“We are very proud of the children who took part,” said Sensei Emily Waring, who runs the club along with Sensei Kathryn King.

“They all worked extremely hard in the build-up, training for a minimum of two hours for four nights a week.

“We can’t fault their commitment and dedication - it was a fantastic experience for them.”

The club raised money to pay for the trip from sponsored walks, raffles and bag-packing at a local supermarket.

Jess King, 17, Beth Goodwin, 14, Molly Blears, 10, Harry King, 13, and 10-year-old Bethany Daley completed the Winsford and Middlewich squad.

Like Rio, Finlay McCallum, from Kenshin Ryu in Northwich, returned home with a bronze medal, this time in the Kumite fighting category.
