Winsford United 3-2 Congleton Town

JON Jones’ 90th-minute winner completed Blues’ recovery from a two-goal deficit against neighbours Congleton on Saturday.

Rob Byrne’s side trailed 2-0 with 20 minutes left, but Sam Marshall netted twice in quick succession before Jones pinched the points for the hosts.

Blues had conceded goals earlier to Scott Barlow and Christopher Middleton, but came back to seal a rare league double over their rivals.

Barlow put Congleton ahead after six minutes, driving past goalkeeper Andy Jones after being allowed space inside Winsford’s penalty area.

The goalscorer then rattled a post moments later, but the Bears established a two-goal advantage before the break when Middleton pounced.

Winsford showed their intent to get back into the game after the interval, and warning shots from Marshall and Matthew Tierney flew narrowly wide.

However, it took until 71 minutes for Byrne’s team to break through when Marshall collected the ball on the left and fired into the bottom corner.

Congleton had to replace injured goalkeeper Martin Pearson with goalscorer Middleton, and the makeshift shot-stopper was soon beaten.

Marshall reacted quickest in a crowded penalty area, smashing home from close range.

Heading into added time, substitute Jamie McQuillan delivered a cross that was met by Jones with a header at the far post.
