WINSFORD swim team’s performance at the Cheshire Championships has been hailed by coach Dan Goodwin.

The 55-strong group ranked as third best in the final standings, the highest placing in the club’s history, after between them winning a record 100 medals.

It earned them the prize of most improved squad for the second successive year.

“We’re a juggernaut that won’t slow down,” said Goodwin.

“Last year was our best yet, so we knew it would be difficult to top that.

“To do so is a fantastic achievement and shows what can be done through sheer hard work and dedication.

“I’m so proud of every single swimmer.”

Jay Cushen was highest-placed overall in the under 12s boys’ category.

A total of 11 others – Alex Clark (under 11s boys), Charlotte Howman (under 11s girls), Ethan Jones, Daniel Hulme (both under 13s boys), Will Deeming, Will Murray (both under 14s boys), Alisha Hawkins, Olivia Capper (under 14s girls), Adam Blackshaw (under 15s boys), Jordan Gaskell (under 16s boys) and Eleanor O’Grady (under 16s girls) – placed inside the top six for their age group.

Winsford also celebrated success in the under 13s boys’ 200m medley and freestyle relay finals.

Hawkins’ victory in the under 14s girls’ 800m freestyle, in a personal best time of 9:23.45, was fast enough to secure entry to the national championships in Sheffield later this year.

A delighted Goodwin added: “Most pleasing for me was to see our swimmers compete for every inch of their race with a never-say-die attitude.”
