WINSFORD Swim Team members have been picked as ones to watch in the future after impressing at a national championship.

Seven boys will spend time at training camps for promising youngsters in the season ahead.

"We've never had that many asked at once," said head coach Dan Goodwin.

"It's a fantastic achievement for them as individuals and also for the club, and further proof that they can develop to a high standard while with us."

Jordan Gaskell has been selected for an Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE), a sports performance programme that provides structured training for teenagers who ranked inside the top eight overall at the British Championships.

Finn Armitt, Dan Hulme, Henry Oliver and Ryan Wheeler have been invited to take part in an England Talent scheme as a reward for their individual performances - and subsequent ranking in their age category - on the national stage.

Meanwhile Jay Cushen and Rory Armitt are among those asked to form part of a regional development programme after classifying towards the top end of the North West rankings last term.

Cushen will also represent the region at the English Schools' Swimming Association (ESSA) Inter-Divisional Championships in Leeds next month.

"I know all of them will represent Winsford Swim Team and their coaches to the highest order," added Goodwin.

"I hope they also take away lots of inspiration and drive that can help them in their future swimming career too."

Following a successful club championships, Winsford will send a squad to take part in a gala hosted by neighbours Northwich to mark their 100th year.

Winsford Swim Team member Alissa Blackshaw was a victor at the Abersoch Oceanswim, winning a 400m race for under 14s.

She was then persuaded to enter a one-mile open race for adults, finishing almost three minutes before her closest rival.

"Alissa braved it without a wetsuit on," said Goodwin.

"She swam strongly considering it was the first time she'd raced that distance in the sea."
