GLYNN Cookson made sure he got his hands on the Cheshire Senior Merit title at the weekend.

Defeated in the final last year, Cookson, one of seven Mid-Cheshire Bowling Association players starting out at Helsby CSC, overcame Steve Morrey in Saturday’s decider at Helsby.

But the Wharton Cons crack shot was pushed to the wire, finally winning 21-20.

Cookson was awarded a walkover against Dean Higginbotham in the first round and saw off Comberbach’s John Gurney 21-12 in the second.

He convincingly overcame Steve Cook 2-17 in the last eight and booked his passage to the final with a 21-5 knockout of Paul Garwood.

Thomas Vickers (Wharton Cons), James Gurney, Daniel Moores (Comberbach), Andy Hamman (Castle Private) and Phil Scott (Rudheath) also featured.

MID Cheshire played their final group-stage fixture in the British Ladies’ County Championship at the weekend, when they met South Yorkshire in Section Three.

Unable to qualify for the knockout stage after losing two of their three matches, they ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline again.Overall they were defeated 454-383, with the home side falling 210-192 and the away team going down 244-191.
