NEWCOMER Nathan Cotterell made an immediate impact, scoring twice to send Winsford United to the next stage of the FA Cup at Staveley on Saturday.

Blues’ reward is a shorter trip, this time to neighbours Alsager Town, later this month.

Cotterell, preferred in attack to Kyle Riley, justified player-manager Lee Duckworth’s choice during an impressive debut.

He put the visitors ahead shortly before the interval, holding off marker Luke Rafferty after receiving Liam Collins’ pass before firing left-footed out of goalkeeper Ed Eley’s reach.

A second almost followed, only for Eley to adjust his position in time to tip over Dean Clarke’s deflected effort.

Staveley had chances too, but Jordon Eldridge fluffed the best one when he shot weakly.

Winsford goalkeeper Mike Langley also saved smartly to deny Leigh Hutchinson.

Blues started the second half on the attack, and Dale Jennings called Eley into action.

They rode their luck again at the other end when Kiaran Watson failed to connected with Hutchinson’s assist with the goal at his mercy.

At the other end, Sam Parr’s header from Scott Taylor’s cross hit an upright.

The visitors doubled their lead on 58 minutes, Cotterell again driving past Eley after Taylor’s dazzling run ended with a perfectly-weighted assist.

Staveley halved their arrears with a quarter of an hour left when substitute Jamie Coulson turned in from close range, but it was no catalyst for a comeback.

Instead another replacement, Danny Hudson, went closest to scoring a third goal for Winsford when his effort from the left flashed wide.
