TENNIS players at Winsford have completed their best summer to date after celebrating a clean sweep of promotions in the South and Mid Cheshire League.

Their men’s A team lost only once on their way to finishing first in Division Two, securing a return to the top flight next year.

The men’s B and C sides matched that feat by topping the table in Division Four and Division Five respectively.

Meanwhile Winsford’s newly-formed mixed quartet, consisting of Alex Lerczak, Simon Nuttall, Julia Kimpton and Jackie Penn, remained unbeaten in a dozen matches to pip Tarporley to the Division Two title.

“We’ve checked, and this hasn’t been done before,” said chairman Chris Mayoh.

“There’s an awful lot to be proud of, and plenty to build on in 2017 too.

“Of course it’s going to be a challenge with all the teams stepping up to a higher level.”

The signs were promising earlier in 2016, when Winsford’s entry in the league’s spring competition won all their matches to finish first in Division Four.

That followed a similarly impressive winter showing, at the end of which they again topped the table in Division Five.

Mayoh told the Guardian that he’d love Winsford to be represented by a ladies’ team in the next summer edition.

“That would be another step forward for us,” he added.

“Our sessions for juniors have been well-attended too, and the club is as healthy as it has been for a while in terms of members.”

He thanked sponsors Cliff Dickenson & Son and Steve Dunning Windows for their ongoing support.

Practice for senior members continues at Knights Grange every Monday.
